Whatever you decide to call your morning, or afternoon, cup of caffeine fix it's good to know that there's more than one way to get your hot cup of ink. First let's know the history of coffee, from bean to drink.
We can trace coffee back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau (yes! a coffee forest!). Legend tells us that a goat herder named Kaldi first discovered the amazing coffee bean when his goats gave the berries a try. They became so energetic that they would not settle down at night. Kaldi reported his findings to the Abbot of the local monastery. The Abbot then made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The Abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery and the discovery of the magic bean spread. As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian peninsula it began a journey which would bring Java Joe across the globe. Thank you dear monks for the brew of coffee and beer!
Now that we know our coffee berry history let's move on to the best way to make this treasure. We've all had the typical drip machine coffee which is okay, it gets us by in the morning but it really is disrespectful to the bean. So I made a huge sacrifice, huge, and decided to test out several ways to brew the brew at home and find the top four, taking into consideration ease of making at home and cost. (the drip machine didn't even make the list, nope).
Note- I recommend grinding your own coffee beans fresh but you'll still get a great cup of Joe as long as you're using a nice brand of coffee and it's fresh.

4) The Cowboy Method:
This method I'm totally putting in because I cannot pass it up. This is the method my father-in-law uses when we are camping and I love it!
This is old=fashioned but it works and you don't really need much of anything to get'r done. All you need is a flame, a saucepan, water, and ground coffee. Fill your saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Throw in your ground coffee (he literally throws a handful of grounds into the pot) and remove the pan from the heat. Let it work it's yee-haw for a few minutes and then pour your coffee into your mug, Pour slowly, ever so slowly to attempt to keep the grounds in the pan and not in your cup. You're still going to have to sip and sift your coffee but totally worth it.
Pros - Easy, no waste, fast, and a bit of a nice smokey flavor.
Cons - Sip and sift. Sip and sift.
3) Steep those grounds
This one is so super simple and easy, similar to the Cowboy Method minus the smoke and grit. For 10 ounces of java, place 1 tablespoon of ground coffee in a tea pot and add boiling water. Let the brew steep for about 3-5 minutes. Pour over a strainer right into your mug and tah-dah! yum!
This method is super easy and this is probably the way our coffee inventing ancestors made their stimulant juice.
Pros - super easy, quick, and super smooth.
Cons - let it steep too long and it can get bitter. Steep not long enough and you'll have weak church coffee.
2)Pour Over Coffee
This method is in my top two because the coffee is smooth, rich and the aroma isn't lost in the process. It's the perfect blend of strength without the bitter and smooth without the wuss.
This is a ceramic dripper that fits over your coffee mug. Place a recycled paper filter in and 1-2 scoops of your favorite Cafe Noir. Slowly pour boiling water into the dripper. Repeat until your mug is full.
Pro's - you’ll get a clean and clear tasting coffee however since it drains a little slower than other methods you can expect more flavor. Use a coarser ground and it will drip a bit quicker.
Cons- this is not quick and can take 5-7 minutes depending on the coarseness of your coffee grounds.
#1 and Favorite Method to Brew is the Almighty French Press
This is my daughters favorite method and she is just as picky as I am when it comes to coffee. I know I'll get a "told ya" as soon as she reads this. Thanks Kay.
The French press seems to be the unofficial mascot of home brewed coffee. It's been around for generations and seems to have a cult like following among the home barista community.
The French press is super easy to use, can be picked up for relatively low cost, and produces a brew with a distinct taste and aroma like no other method. You'll have a unique, non-harsh aromatic coffee that's full of flavor that is particular to your beans.
A common mistake with the French Press is the wrong grind. A course grind is the only way to go. Too fine a grind means you'll have particles stuck in the filter and passing into the finished Java. This will also leave you with a bitter tasting mess. So course grind!
Pros- The best tasting coffee!
Cons -It's not super quick but it's not super slow either. From start to finish you'll need about ten minutes. Your cup may have a little sediment, so avoid drinking the last couple of sips.
Now that you read through all of this I have the BEST coffee recipe. Not just coffee? NO! There's more!
No matter which coffee brewing method you use this recipe is the ultimate best. Start with your coffee bean of choice ground to your preference to your drip, French press, Kettle, or pan. Add 1tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp fresh grated nutmeg, 1 1/2 tsp ground or shredded turmeric (fresh or dried), a pinch of baking soda. Brew and enjoy! The flavor is uh-maz-ing, smooth, with a touch of spice. I love the turmeric because I have to get in my daily dose anyway so this does it. The cinnamon and nutmeg add a whole other level to your coffee which enhances your olfactory and taste buds at the same time. The baking soda balances the acid and PH so there is no way your coffee will taste bitter.
My husband likes to add Ghee to his coffee instead of cream but I love good hot cream added. Yes heat it up before you add to your coffee. Don't shock your Joe with that cold cream!
